What is high potential and gifted education?
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is how our school supports students with advanced learning needs.
We do this through:
- effective teaching strategies
- tailored support during lessons that stretch, challenge and inspire
- access to a wide range of opportunities both within and beyond our school.
Our high potential and gifted education opportunities
Our students engage with HPGE in the classroom, in our school and across NSW.
At Marayong South Public School, High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is part of our everyday teaching and learning.
We recognise that many of our students have high potential, and we are committed to nurturing that potential so it can grow into something truly powerful.
Our teachers identify students' learning needs and use evidence-informed practices to challenge and extend them. We offer a variety of learning pathways, including enrichment, extension, and opportunities for acceleration.
Our classrooms are inclusive and supportive, fostering a strong sense of belonging and encouraging students to take risks, think creatively, and collaborate.
Flexible groupings, student-led learning, and strengths-based feedback with clear goals and opportunities for self-assessment are embedded in our approach.
Staff at Marayong South engage in ongoing professional learning to ensure we meet the diverse needs of all students — including our high potential and gifted learners.
We value the individuality of every student, offering flexible and diverse opportunities to support their growth and passions.
Students are encouraged to develop their strengths through activities such as debating, academic competitions, critical thinking workshops, and STEM pathways including coding, and Lego Club.
We celebrate talent across a wide range of creative areas, including school performances, talent showcases, drama, visual arts, choir, and dance. Students also take on important behind-the-scenes roles in tech and production.
Leadership is fostered through the Student Representative Council (SRC), peer mentoring programs, and student voice initiatives. Wellbeing is a priority, supported by Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) programs, our dedicated wellbeing staff.
Sport is a vital part of school life, with opportunities in PSSA, house competitions, skill development programs, and inclusive physical education that meets the needs of all students.
Our students engage in a wide range of statewide programs designed to extend and enrich their potential.
Students take part in opportunities such as the Premier’s Spelling Bee, Premier’s Reading Challenge and Premier Sports Challenge competitions.
We also provide access to statewide and NSW Department of Education support for our high potential and gifted learners. Our staff assist students with entries, preparation, and reflection, ensuring that every experience contributes to ongoing learning and growth.
